Understanding Home Care Packages in Australia

A Home Care Package (HCP) is a government-subsidized program to provide coordinated care services to keep frail older Australians safely living in their homes. The packages provide a combination of flexible care services to enhance daily living from personal care to nursing care.

Who Is Eligible?

You might be eligible for a Home Care Package if you do the following:

  • Be an older Australian who has a problem with day-to-day activities.
  • Register with My Aged Care and complete an ACAT/ACAS assessment
  • Have accepted care level allocation according to your needs.

The Four Levels of Home Care Packages

There are four levels of Home Care Packages, each offering different levels of support:

Levels Support Provided
Level 1 Basic support (cleaning, meal prep, social support)
Level 2 Low-level care (personal care, transport assistance)
Level 3 Intermediate care (nursing, mobility support, therapy)
Level 4 High-level care (complex nursing, dementia care)

Each level of package gets a certain set amount of funding for service delivery. Thus, the higher your level, the more funding you get.

At Support Network, we can help you make the right decision regarding the level of care you need, and search for providers that best suit your needs and preferences.

How to Apply for a Home Care Package

Many older Australians find it difficult to apply for Home Care Packages.Let me break it down into a set of simple steps for you:

Step 1: My Aged Care Registration

  • Call My Aged Care or apply online.
  • Give details of any difficulties you experience in daily living and your care needs.
  • Make an appointment for assessment by theAgedCareAssessmentTeam(ACAT/ACAS).

Step 2: Assessment by ACAT/ACAS

  • An assessor will visit your house and assess you for your needs regarding care.
  • You'll be allocated a Home Care Package level after you've been assessed.
  • If allowed, you will be mentioned on the National Priority System (waiting queue).

Step 3: Wait for the Allocation of Your Package

  • A usual wait occurs to allocate a package due to the demand.
  • While waiting, you may be eligible for short-term Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) services

Step 4: Select Your Home Care Provider

  • Compare providers available using the My Aged Care Find a Provider tool.
  • Consider fees, services, experience, and flexibility.
  • Support Network helps you choose the best provider so that you get quality care at a price you can afford.

  • Work with your provider to create your care plan, taking into account your needs and your preferences for care.
