Key finding

Jobs and Skills Australia benchmark: approximately $46 median hourly earnings

Support worker remuneration is frequently misunderstood because employee earnings, award wages, independent contractor rates and the amount charged for a support service are different measures.

Jobs and Skills Australia reports median full-time weekly earnings of approximately $1,761 and median hourly earnings of approximately $46 per hour for Aged and Disabled Carers. These occupational earnings figures are not NDIS participant prices.

Award wages

Depending on classification and circumstances, employees working in disability and home care may fall under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award. Fair Work has announced changes affecting covered home-care disability employees from December 2026, including increases of up to 15% to applicable minimum award rates.

NDIS prices are not wages

NDIS maximum prices for many supports are not the worker's wage. They may incorporate other costs involved in delivering support.

Why rates vary

Rates can differ according to time and day, weekends and public holidays, worker experience, qualifications, complexity of support, location, remote loadings, travel and employment versus independent contracting arrangements.

What Support Network's data can and cannot tell us

The current worker dataset contains strong geographic and demographic information but does not contain hourly-rate or earnings fields. Support Network therefore does not claim suburb-level worker rates from this dataset.

Future research can add genuine median, percentile, weekday, weekend, metropolitan and regional rate statistics once reliable anonymised agreed-rate or invoicing data is incorporated.

Methodology & sources

Research base: Support Network proprietary analysis of 1,971 active worker records created between July and 2 October 2026, supplemented with Australian Government data.

Government sources: Jobs and Skills Australia Aged and Disabled Carers occupation profile and workforce research; Australian Bureau of Statistics Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers 2022; NDIS Review and NDIA workforce/pricing material; Fair Work Ombudsman guidance where relevant.

Limitations: Support Network's database is a proprietary platform dataset and is not a statistically representative survey of every Australian support worker. Results based on incomplete fields use the number of usable observations. Personally identifying information is excluded.
