Australian Support Worker Workforce Report 2027

Based on original analysis of 1,971 active Support Network worker records

A new generation is entering Australia's care workforce

01 Median age, approx.
28
vs 41 for the broader Aged and Disabled Carers occupation
02 Under 35, approx.
71%
of workers with usable age data
Key finding

Median age 28 • Approximately 71% of workers with usable age data are under 35

Support Network analysed 1,971 active worker records collected between July and early October 2026. The data reveals a geographically diverse and notably young cohort participating in the care economy.

Among 1,272 records containing a plausible adult age between 18 and 75, the median age was approximately 28 years. Jobs and Skills Australia reports a median age of 41 for the broader Aged and Disabled Carers occupation.

Approximately 71% of workers with usable age data were under 35, with 25-34 the largest age group.

Where workers are located

Of 1,882 records reliably assigned to a state or territory, NSW accounted for approximately one-third.

Strong local concentrations appeared in areas such as Liverpool, Blacktown, Auburn, Merrylands, Hurstville and Wollongong in NSW and Tarneit, Rockbank, Mickleham, Point Cook, Truganina, Wollert, Melton South and Craigieburn in Victoria.

Care is fundamentally local. A participant needs a suitable worker who can reach them at the time and location required.

What the findings mean

The data suggests digital workforce platforms may be attracting a considerably younger cohort than the established care workforce. The industry's challenge is to convert this interest into a sustainable, skilled and geographically responsive workforce.

Conclusion

The workforce question is not simply how to find more workers. It is how to attract, retain and efficiently connect the right workers with the right clients in the right locations.
