Key finding

376,300 Aged and Disabled Carers • Annual employment growth approximately 27,100

Australia's care economy is becoming one of the country's most important employment markets. Jobs and Skills Australia reports approximately 376,300 Aged and Disabled Carers, with annual employment growth of approximately 27,100.

Three structural forces are converging: Australia's population is ageing, the number of Australians identified as living with disability has increased, and policy increasingly supports care and support within homes and communities.

A younger workforce may be emerging

Among 1,272 Support Network records with plausible adult age information, the median age is approximately 28, compared with approximately 41 for the broader Aged and Disabled Carer workforce.

This does not prove that the whole Australian workforce is becoming younger, but it suggests digital recruitment and marketplace channels may attract a younger cohort.

Gender diversity

Nationally, women represent approximately 73% of Aged and Disabled Carers. Among 861 Support Network records where gender was supplied, approximately 60% were female and 40% male. Because gender was missing from more than half of the dataset, this finding should be interpreted cautiously.

The workforce is local

Australia's care workforce is better understood as thousands of small local labour markets rather than one national market. Participant needs, worker availability, skills and travel distance all influence whether nominal workforce supply translates into real access to care.

The opportunity

The next phase of Australia's care economy is not simply about employing more people. Technology can improve discovery, matching, scheduling and geographic utilisation to create a better connected workforce.

Methodology & sources

Research base: Support Network proprietary analysis of 1,971 active worker records created between July and 2 October 2026, supplemented with Australian Government data.

Government sources: Jobs and Skills Australia Aged and Disabled Carers occupation profile and workforce research; Australian Bureau of Statistics Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers 2022; NDIS Review and NDIA workforce/pricing material; Fair Work Ombudsman guidance where relevant.

Limitations: Support Network's database is a proprietary platform dataset and is not a statistically representative survey of every Australian support worker. Results based on incomplete fields use the number of usable observations. Personally identifying information is excluded.
