Home should be the place where you can finally exhale. But when noise through the walls keeps you on edge and sleep comes in fragments, feeling safe can seem out of reach.
In this month’s Referral Partner Business Spotlight, we’re sharing a story from Mindful Hearts Recovery Coaching that began with listening to what needed to change. Months later, after a move and steady support along the way, came a simple but meaningful milestone: a full night’s sleep.
For a long time, home was somewhere to stay on alert. Noise through the walls and an escalating situation with a neighbour made it difficult to settle. Sleep was broken. Leaving the house was hard. A housing transfer had been requested before, but the process felt confusing and the person did not feel heard.
The support team did not begin with a stack of forms. First came a conversation about what needed to change. A quieter home mattered, as did having a place that met the person’s needs and kept important connections within reach.
Those priorities gave the housing transfer request a clear purpose. The goal was not simply to move to a different address. It was to find somewhere that felt safer, shaped around the person’s own understanding of home.
Together, the person and support team gathered letters from the treating team. They also worked on a statement, in the person’s own words, explaining how the current home was affecting their health. Support was available during phone calls when the person wanted it.
The person’s experience remained central to the request. Alongside the supporting letters and forms was an explanation of what daily life had become, and what needed to be different.
A housing transfer was not an immediate solution. Some weeks brought progress. Other weeks passed without a response from the housing provider, and that silence was difficult. The team continued checking in and following up on the paperwork throughout the wait.
Several months later, a new home was offered. It met the priorities identified in those early conversations. The work of listening had given the process a direction; the offer was a step towards the kind of home the person had described.
Moving brought its own stresses and practical tasks. Support continued with setting up utilities, linking in with local services and working out new bus routes. The process did not end with the offer of a home. There was still a new area to navigate and everyday arrangements to put in place.
A few weeks after moving, the person reported that they had slept through the night.
That is the detail at the heart of this story. After interrupted sleep and a constant sense of being on alert, a full night’s rest was a meaningful change. It gives a personal picture of how closely the experience of home and wellbeing were connected in this account.
This was one person’s experience, with their own priorities and their own timeframe. The thread running through it was consistent: listen to what matters, make room for the person’s voice and continue the practical support through the waiting and the move.
A safer home began with a conversation. A few months later, the change could be felt in something as ordinary, and as important, as sleeping through the night.
