What You Contribute

Your contribution is a percentage of the service price, determined by an assessment of income and assets by Services Australia. Everyone can access clinical care free of charge. Personal care and other independence services cost 5 to 50 percent according to your means; everyday living services (cleaning and gardening) 17.5 to 80 percent.

A full pensioner paying for a $62 hour of personal care contributes $3.10. A self-funded retiree (without a health card) pays $31. Neither pays anything for nursing.

One piece of paperwork worth doing

Where there is no income and assets assessment completed with Services Australia, a person is considered "means not disclosed" and charged the highest contribution rate, regardless of their actual income and assets. Others avoid it for privacy, and as a consequence may be charged self-funded-retiree rates on their pension income.

Do not let funding go to waste

Support at Home funding is paid quarterly, and you can carry over only $1,000 or 10% of the quarterly budget, whichever is greater. Above that is returned to the government at the end of the quarter. On Classification 6, underspending by $5,000 in a quarter means forfeiting approximately $3,825 for good.

The amounts are indexed on 1 July, and you should check with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to confirm the current amounts.

Can I choose my own support worker?

Yes, this is the very essence of our work. Before you make arrangements you speak with or meet workers, and you choose who supports you; you can change if it's not the right fit. Compatibility is as important as qualifications, and support is personal work.

What if I already have a provider?

You can change at any time and your funding stays with you, there are no exit fees under the current rules. There's no disruption to your support as we take care of the transition, including handling matters with your previous provider. On the whole, people experience a much easier change than they'd anticipated.

When does personal care become free?

From 1 October 2026, personal care (showering, dressing, grooming and continence support) will be classified as a clinical support, meaning it will be fully funded by the government, with no contribution required from the participant within your budget.
