What Home Care In Coorparoo Actually Involves

Coorparoo is an old suburb of Brisbane, and the housing that makes it beautiful is the same that makes it complicated when it comes to getting old. Supporting independent living around that is what we plan for.

The first step is to look for support workers who are already in the local area, and that is the biggest determinant of whether an arrangement is successful or not.

The stairs are the whole story

Coorparoo is located in a series of ridges and gullies, and the classic Coorparoo house is a Queenslander or post-war house built on stumps, with a front flight of stairs, and sometimes a further set of stairs at the rear.

That is charming at fifty and genuinely dangerous at eighty. Falls on stairs are among the most serious injuries older people have at home, and in Coorparoo they are often essential to get to the front door. We regularly support people who have simply stopped using half their own house because the internal stairs became too difficult, or who haven't been to their own back yard in two years.

In practice this shapes support in a number of ways. Personal care visits require more time than the same type of visit on a flat block, as it takes longer to get someone safely to a bathroom or to and from a car. Shopping and laundry require a person who can carry or lift up and down. A worker who is casual about stair safety is a serious risk here, in a way it wouldn't be in a single-storey home in a newer suburb.

The one thing that Coorparoo households can use most is an occupational therapy home assessment, and under Support at Home it's clinical care, so it's free regardless of income and assets. An OT will assess the stairs, the bathroom, the lighting on the landing and the path from the bed to the toilet at 2am, and recommend a stair rail, a ramp, non-slip treads or a second handrail. Much of that equipment is funded through a separate stream that is not in your service budget. Often families are charged for support hours that better equipment could have reduced, simply because nobody arranged the assessment.

Long-term residents in a changing suburb

Coorparoo has undergone a tremendous transformation over 20 years. When many of the people we support bought their homes, there was no Coorparoo Square, no apartment developments along Old Cleveland Road, no cafes, none of that.

That is more important than it may seem. In a suburb where almost everything has changed over the years, many older Coorparoo residents have lived in the same house for forty or fifty years. The neighbours they knew have gone. The stores they once used have all changed hands. Their bond is with the house and the street rather than with a community that still remembers them, and that produces a specific type of isolation which the busy inner-city suburb conceals well.

That's why social support here is valued more than its hours, because it protects emotional wellbeing. For someone who has outlived most of their street, company at home, a lift to the shops at Camp Hill or Stones Corner, someone to sit and have a cup of tea with, that is not a lifestyle extra. It is the main thing, and often what keeps someone at home rather than moving into residential aged care.

Hospitals, appointments and getting there

The location of Coorparoo is a real asset. The Princess Alexandra Hospital and Greenslopes Private are both close, and the Queen Elizabeth II and Mater are accessible. Most specialists people need are within a short drive.

The problem is parking and traffic. Old Cleveland Road and Logan Road are slow at rush hour, parking at the hospitals costs a lot and is often full, and the person dropped off at the hospital entrance can spend the rest of the day waiting alone. What that difference is worth

Take a Classification 5 participant: $39,697 per year, or $9,924 per quarter. After the 10 percent care management deduction, approximately $8,932 per quarter is available for services.

What You Contribute

The out-of-pocket contribution is a percentage of the service charge, determined by an income and assets assessment made with Services Australia. Clinical care is always free. Personal care and other independence services cost 5 to 50 percent based on your means, and everyday living services like cleaning and gardening 17.5 to 80 percent.

A full pensioner paying for a $62 hour of personal care pays $3.10. A self-funded retiree without a health card contributes $31. Neither pays anything for nursing.

One piece of paperwork worth doing

When you have not had an income and assets assessment by Services Australia, they classify you as "means not disclosed" and assess you at the highest contribution rate, even if you are really in a low income or low asset situation. Some people avoid it because they don't want to be seen, and then pay self-funded-retiree rates on their pension income.

Do not let funding go to waste

Support at Home funding is provided quarterly, and you can only carry over up to $1,000 or 10 per cent of the quarterly budget, whichever is higher. Anything above that is returned to the government when the quarter runs out. On Classification 6, the amount lost if a quarter is underspent is about $3,825.

Assessments frequently occur on a 'good morning', families sanitise the reality out of protectiveness, and the classification becomes a performance, not a life.

Is an occupational therapy assessment really free?

Yes. Occupational therapy is clinical care provided under Support at Home (no participant contribution based on income or assets). Recommendations for equipment and home modifications made by the OT are also part of a separate funding stream that does not draw from your service budget. It's the least utilised free service in the whole program.

How much does home care cost?

When it comes to rates, our support worker services are generally in the range of $40 to $65 per hour, whereas traditional full-service companies charge about $65 to $85 per hour. Loadings are extra on public holidays and weekends. Nursing and allied health services are 100% government funded and therefore charge you nothing under Support at Home, no matter what your income or assets level may be. Prior to any commitment, we send a full written price list.

Do I need government funding to use your services?

No. We work with Support at Home participants, people who currently receive a Home Care Package, clients of the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, and privately funded families. Many people use us privately until funds are allocated, and then keep the same worker once their plan starts.

How does Support at Home funding work?

Home Care Packages were replaced by Support at Home on 1 November 2025. They are grouped into eight categories, from approximately $10,731 at level 1 to approximately $78,106 at level 8, released in quarterly budgets. 10% is paid to care management each quarter before services are purchased. The amounts are indexed on 1 July each year, check current rates with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422.

Can I choose my own support worker?

Yes, and this is at the core of how we work. No arrangements are made before you speak to or meet workers, you choose your support, and you can change if it isn't a good fit. Support is personal work, and compatibility is as important as qualifications.

What if I already have a provider?

There are no exit fees under the current rules, and you can switch and take your funding whenever you want. There is no gap in your support, as we handle the changeover and liaise with your previous provider. Most people find changing a little easier than they thought they would.

When does personal care become free?

From 1 October 2026, personal care (showering, dressing, grooming and continence support) is reclassified as a clinical support, to be 100% funded by the government, with no participant contribution required from within your budget.
