Respite for family carers

Respite care: organised rest periods to allow the primary carer to rest, work, or have an afternoon of their own.

Overnight & sleepover support

Overnight presence in the house, either for safety or for support or to provide a family carer with a night's rest.

Nursing

Registered nurses provide wound care, medication management, continence support, dementia care and chronic disease management, all fully funded, so it costs you nothing.

Allied health & therapy

Occupational therapists, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists and podiatrists, including home assessments, home exercise programs and help with balance, dizziness and vertigo, that may also minimise the paid support you require.

Clinical services cost you nothing

All of the following are fully funded by the government under Support at Home, with no contribution according to your income or assets: nursing, palliative care, and allied health professionals such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists and podiatrists. Also, from 1 October 2026, personal care will be fully funded.

Home Care In A Suburb That Speaks Many Languages

The southside of Brisbane, including Sunnybank Hills, is one of the most culturally concentrated areas in the city. For home care, and for families who would rather stay home than move a parent into an aged care home, it makes all the difference in the world to what good support looks like.

A support worker walking through a Sunnybank Hills neighbourhood
We first try to find support workers who live close to Sunnybank Hills, as this is the greatest influencing factor on whether an arrangement is successful or not.

Why language matching is not optional here

Surrounding Sunnybank Hills, there are also significant communities of Taiwanese, Korean, Vietnamese and Hong Kong speakers, with the Sunnybank precinct being the epicentre of Chinese-speaking life in Brisbane. Many of the people that we support here came decades ago, raised families, established businesses, and are now in their late 70s and 80s.

What happens when a support worker and older client are not in the same language? Communication regresses to the bare minimum of yes and no, thank you and that hurts. Everything else vanishes: a precise description of a pain, what is disturbing them, a joke, being known rather than managed. Symptoms get missed because nobody could describe them. Food is delivered that nobody is hungry for. Personal care is often refused, simply because it makes people feel exposed in front of a stranger who won't tell them what they are going to do.

We match on language, cultural background and gender, and Sunnybank Hills is one of the simpler places in Brisbane to do this well, as it is where the workforce lives. The people who can do this work are your neighbours: Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Vietnamese, Taiwanese Hokkien.

A point to plan for early

If a person with dementia has acquired a second language, they tend to forget it but hold on to their original one. Someone who has spent 40 years speaking confident English in Brisbane may revert primarily to Cantonese or Mandarin as dementia progresses, at which point an English-only worker genuinely cannot communicate with them. Families who anticipate this manage the transition far better than those who get caught up in it in a crisis.

Food, family and how households actually work

The obvious part is language. The more subtle part is everything that surrounds it.

One of the home care services that is most widely used and overlooked is meal preparation, especially when the worker doesn't know the cuisine. Congee is not porridge. The rice matters. Someone who has been eating the same breakfast for 70 years does not want toast, and if that is what they get, they eat less, lose weight and nobody writes it down. If the worker can go to Market Square or Sunnybank Plaza and prepare what the person actually grew up eating, then it is nutrition work and practical nutrition advice, not catering.

The expectations of families vary as well. Adult children in many of these homes feel a responsibility to provide care personally and are reluctant to accept care from others. This is a legitimate and valid cultural stance, and it isn't successful to challenge it. What does work is introducing the support slowly; starting with cleaning or shopping rather than personal care; offering support for the family instead of for the person; and letting trust develop before anything intimate is suggested.

Modesty rules also play a role, and often gender matching for personal care is not a choice but a requirement. Be clear when you call. It is a reasonable request and something we plan for, not negotiate.

The practical southside details

Hilly, as the name suggests, many of the houses in Sunnybank Hills are 1970s and 1980s brick-and-tile built on sloping blocks, with a few steps to the entry, or a sunken living room or a split level inside. It's not Coorparoo-steep, but it's enough to matter for someone with a walker.

The fastest way to work out whether a rail, a ramp or a bathroom change would reduce your need for paid help is to have an occupational therapy home assessment, free of charge, regardless of your income, as part of Support at Home. Equipment is provided on a separate funding stream, not using any of your service hours.

The closest public hospital is the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital at Coopers Plains, with Sunnybank Private nearby and the PA reachable. We arrange transport, including going in with the person, and for anyone who wants to talk about medical matters in their first language, a worker who speaks that language makes a big difference at the appointment, even where a professional interpreter is also present.

Why Families Choose Us

The majority of providers send the person that has been rostered. What you pay is different, who walks through your door is different, and it's because we work differently, with personalised care.

Local workers, not dispatched ones

First, we consider the existing population in close proximity to Sunnybank Hills. A worker who comes across Brisbane arrives late, charges are incurred and eventually the worker no longer takes the job. A local one lasts for years.

You choose your own support worker

You converse with or meet people without any arrangements being made, and then you make the decision. If someone is not the right fit, we continue to look, that's not a complaint, it's just normal.

Your funding buys more hours

Since there is no agency margin between you and your worker, our rates are more or less $40 to $65 per hour, against $65 to $85 per hour through traditional agencies. On a mid-level classification, that is approximately three extra hours of support per week.

The same person, week after week

Support work is a thing of continuity. Someone who knows your routines will see when there's a change, and that is how problems are detected early rather than becoming emergencies.

Straight answers about money

We provide a comprehensive written price list before you sign, explain exactly what your funding covers, and let you know clearly if we're not a fit for your needs.

What that difference is worth

For a Classification 5 participant, the annual fund is $39,697 and the quarterly payments are $9,924. After the 10 per cent care management charge, approximately $8,932 per quarter is left for services.

Hourly rate paid Hours per quarter Hours per week
$80, typical agency rate 111.6 about 8.6
$58, with Support Network 154 about 11.8

That means an additional three and a quarter hours of support per week, using the same funding.

What You Contribute

Your out-of-pocket contribution is a percentage of the cost of the service, determined by an income and assets assessment carried out by Services Australia. All clinical care is free of charge. Personal care and other independence services 5 to 50 per cent depending on means; everyday living, such as cleaning and gardening, 17.5 to 80 per cent.

A full pensioner paying for a $62 hour of personal care pays $3.10. Individuals who do not have a health card who are self-funded retirees pay $31. Both pay nothing for nursing.

One piece of paperwork worth doing

If you didn't do your income and assets assessment with Services Australia you will be listed as "means not disclosed" and charged the highest rate of contribution despite your actual situation. Others skip it and end up paying self-funded-retiree rates on a pension income.

Do not let funding go to waste

Funding for Support at Home is delivered in quarterly increments and you may only carry over $1,000 or 10 percent of the quarterly budget. Above that is returned to the government at the end of the quarter. On Classification 6, underspending by $5,000 in a quarter means losing around $3,825 permanently.

This is monitored for the individuals we work for and flagged while there is still time to bring services forward.

Getting Started

Four steps; the first one is free, a phone call.

Tell us what you need

Call 1300 671 931. Share with us your Sunnybank Hills street, property type, classification (if applicable) and your support needs. If you're not funded yet we'll tell you what you can expect from My Aged Care.

We look for workers nearby

We begin with people who live locally and who fit you: experience, times, gender, language. You are not assigned to anyone, you see who is available.

You meet them and decide

Contact or visit the individuals we recommend before making any commitments. You choose. If the first person isn't right, we keep going.

Support starts, and we stay in touch

Your worker starts work on your agreed schedule. We make sure it works, keep an eye on the quarterly budget so nothing goes astray, and revise it to fit the changes.

Do not have funding yet?

Start with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. Approval and funding typically take a few months, so it is advisable to begin your process before you need assistance. Many families use us privately in that time period and stay with the same worker when their plan is implemented.

The one thing that's more important than anything else: at the assessment, talk about the toughest day of a regular week, not the easy one. Often, assessments take place on a good morning, families gloss over the picture, and so the classification is based on a performance and not a life.

Questions People Ask Us

Do you provide home care in Sunnybank Hills?

Yes. Our support workers are located throughout Sunnybank Hills and the surrounding area including Sunnybank, Runcorn, Eight Mile Plains, Macgregor, Robertson. We specifically search for workers who live close by, we do not send people all over Brisbane, this is the one thing we see as the biggest key to whether an arrangement lasts or not.

Can you provide a support worker who speaks Mandarin or Cantonese?

Yes, in most cases this is, indeed, something we specialise in on the southside. We also have workers who speak Korean, Vietnamese and other languages. Please specify the language, as Mandarin and Cantonese are not the same; if there is a mismatch, it is close to being as useless as if there hadn't been any match. We will tell you the truth about what is available in your area and not promise something we can't deliver.

My mother will not accept help from outside the family. What can we do?

This is very common and pushing rarely works. What does work is introducing support over time, beginning with cleaning or shopping rather than personal care; framing it as something for the whole family rather than a replacement for the family; and matching a worker culturally so it doesn't feel foreign. Cultural matching frequently resolves refusal that no amount of persuasion would.

How much does home care cost?

The fees for our support workers generally range from $40 to $65 per hour for personal care and domestic support services, whereas the fees for a full-service agency are about $65 to $85 per hour. Loadings apply on weekends and public holidays. Nursing and allied health are fully funded by the government and do not cost you anything under Support at Home, no matter how much income or assets you have. Before making a purchase we provide a detailed written price list.

Do I need government funding to use your services?

No. We serve Support at Home participants, those who have moved on from a Home Care Package, families with a client on the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, and privately funded families. A lot of people begin with us before funding is secured and then continue on with the same worker once the funding is approved.

How does Support at Home funding work?

Home Care Packages were replaced by Support at Home on 1 November 2025. The classifications range from about $10,731 a year at level 1 to approximately $78,106 at level 8, and are released in quarterly budgets. 10% of each quarter is allocated to care management before services are purchased. Amounts are indexed on 1 July, so please check the latest amounts with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422.

Can I choose my own support worker?

Yes, and this is at the very heart of our practice. You talk with or meet workers before making arrangements and you have the option to change if it is not a good fit. Support is personal work, and compatibility can be as important as qualifications.

What if I already have a provider?

At any point you can switch and you take your funds with you, there is no exit fee under the current rules. There's no interruption to your support as we take care of the changeover process, which involves working with your previous provider. People generally find the change much easier than they thought.

When does personal care become free?

As of 1 October 2026, personal care becomes a clinical support, which is 100% funded by the government, and you will have no participant contribution within your allocated funds.
