Support Coordination for Wollongong and the Illawarra

Wollongong is the central hub of the Illawarra and one of the largest cities in regional New South Wales, with a large number of NDIS participants across the northern suburbs, the city, Shellharbour and Kiama. As a regional centre, it’s smaller than Sydney, which means knowledgeable coordination is really needed, because fewer providers serve it.

The Illawarra’s geography, a narrow coastal strip between the escarpment and the sea, means high population density but uneven provider coverage between the northern suburbs, the city centre, and the growing south around Shellharbour and Dapto. A local point of contact who knows which services have real capacity can help you beat the regional waitlists.

Our coordinators help Illawarra participants connect with the right providers and bring their plans to life, from the northern suburbs, to the Wollongong CBD, through the University precinct, to Dapto, Shellharbour and Kiama.

Areas we serve include Shellharbour, Dapto, Kiama, Corrimal, Warrawong, Figtree, Unanderra, Albion Park, Fairy Meadow and Port Kembla.

Support Coordination in Wollongong: Your Questions

How many providers are available in the Illawarra?

Fewer than in Sydney, which is exactly why a support coordinator is useful here. We know which Illawarra providers have capacity and where, and we can look to neighbouring regions as well.

Do you cover all of the Illawarra, or just Wollongong?

The entire area, from the northern suburbs to Wollongong and on to Shellharbour, Dapto and Kiama. You get the same service in person or remotely, wherever it’s useful.

Is there a cost to support coordination?

No. If support coordination is included in your plan under Capacity Building, you don’t pay extra, and you won’t receive an invoice unless you’re self-managed. It doesn’t come from your core supports.

How many levels of support coordination are there?

Level 1 is Support Connection ($80.06/hr for 2025-26), a lighter touch for connecting to services. The most common level is Level 2, Coordination of Supports ($100.14/hr). Level 3, Specialist Support Coordination ($190.54/hr), is provided by more qualified practitioners for people with complex needs or high risk.

Can I choose my own support coordinator?

Yes. If you have support coordination in your plan, you don’t have to stay with a coordinator you’ve been assigned, and you can switch if they aren’t a good match.
